Hinterland Who's Who

The microclimate and ecosystem of Southeastern Vancouver Island are rather unique.  This region is in the rain shadow of the Vancouver Island Mountain Range, hence, this area is drier than the surrounding regions.  There are many plant species that occur here and nowhere else in BC.  The rain shadow forest is the most diverse in terms of total numbers of plant species and contains some of British Columbia's most endangered species and habitats.

Many excellent birdwatching opportunities exist on Vancouver Island. The common bird list features birds that are relatively easy to identify and can be seen regularly when hiking around Southeast Vancouver Island. Because of the mild climate, many species winter in the area. In total, there have been approximately 387 bird species recorded on Vancouver Island.  You may also want to check out some informative bird links

Although mammals are abundant (there are lots of black-tailed deer and black bears), the diversity is relatively low.  Animal recolonization of the Island has been slow since the last glaciation. View a complete list of mammals on Vancouver Island if you like.

A short list of edible wild plants common across most of North America provides a starting point for those interested in wild foraging. Please remember to positively identify any plant before eating it.
