Backpacking Strathcona Provincial Park - Arnica Lake en route to Phillip's Ridge

Park Description

Strathcona Provincial Park, more than 250,000 hectares in size, is located on central Vancouver Island.  Much of the park is comprised of mountain peaks and alpine tarns. Hiking and backpacking trails range from relatively easy to rugged and challenging.

Black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk are frequently seen at lower elevations in the park and while cougar are present they are seldom seen.  The numerous black bears are not considered problematic but should be treated with caution and respect nonetheless.  More park info is available.

Backpacking Trails offered

Elk River
Ideal for beginning backpackers, this trail follows the Elk River up to Landslide Lake, set in an amphitheatre of mountains.  Trail length is about 11 km with a total elevation change of 600m.  Camp set-up is on a gravel bar 9 km from the trailhead.

Flower Ridge
